On 1 and 2 December 2023, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, participated in the World Leader's Summit UNFCCC COP28 in Dubai. At COP28, he delivered speeches at the Triple Nuclear Energy Conference, affirming the further development of nuclear energy, and at the meeting of heads and prime ministers of over 200 states. The conference is under the auspices of the United Nations.

At the Triple Nuclear Energy Conference, the Czech Prime Minister spoke about the importance of nuclear energy for the future. According to the Prime Minister, the Czech Republic aims for 50% of electricity production to come from nuclear power plants by 2050.

"Nuclear power is reliable and safe. I believe that the development of nuclear energy is an extremely important strategic investment for our future," Fiala said in his speech.

According to the Czech Prime Minister, nuclear energy is clean and efficient, not only in terms of carbon emissions, but also in terms of economics. The Czech Republic has 50 years of experience with nuclear energy and intends to continue to be at the forefront of this initiative.

"Large-scale decarbonisation requires the gradual harmonisation of international nuclear standards. We need fair funding and research support. This is the essence of our strategy, which we presented at the July meeting of the Energy Council in Spain," the Prime Minister recalled.

The Triple Nuclear Energy Conference adopted a declaration calling for collaboration among alliance members and tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. It also addresses the necessary measures for responsible, safe and sustainable operation of nuclear power plants. The Prime Minister also spoke at the conference of world leaders. Here he reminded that climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of our time.

"Our partners around the world are facing serious challenges. From extreme weather to water shortages, which I saw during my visit to Africa. The Czech Republic is ready to give 4 million US dollars until 2027 to the Green Climate Fund, which will help developing countries face climate change and adapt to its impacts," Fiala said.

He concluded by saying that the Czech Republic supports the Paris Agreement and the EU's climate and energy goals. This includes the goal of a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
