Government Commissioner Lucie Fuková celebrated International Romani Day at the Castle. With President Pavel and Romani students

President Petr Pavel and his wife, Eva Pavlová, met with the Government Commissioner for Romani Minority Affairs, Lucie Fuková, and Romani students at Prague Castle. Together they celebrated International Romani Day (8 April). The Government Commissioner spoke about the history of Romani emancipation and the importance of education, President Pavel emphasised the need to break down prejudices, and students presented their stories. The Romani anthem was also sung for the first time at the Castle.

Prime Minister Fiala held talks with President Marcos in Manila and supported Czech companies in the local market

On Monday, 17 April 2023, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, began a business trip to Asia in Manila, Philippines. He and President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr. discussed the development of mutual cooperation and trade relations and supported joint projects in the defence industry. The Prime Minister also opened the Czech-Philippine Business Forum, which was attended by more than 100 representatives of companies from both countries, and paid tribute to the memory of José Rizal.

The popular Open Days of historical buildings managed by the Government Office will continue on selected weekends and public holidays in 2023. For the second year, the Straka Academy garden will also be open to the public on weekends.

The Kellner Family Foundation donates CZK 500 million to build a cancer research centre in Motol, Prague

The Kellner Family Foundation has formally agreed with Motol University Hospital and the Ministry of Health to build a Scientific and Diagnostic Oncology Centre at the Motol Hospital grounds. The Foundation will donate CZK 500 million towards the project, CZK 300 million being allocated to the research facility’s construction and the remaining CZK 200 million for later use by the centre to support scientific research and to purchase equipment once the centre opens in spring, 2026. According to the agreement, the Ministry of Health will provide CZK 240 million from its own resources to purchase the centre’s instruments and internal equipment. The agreement also includes a commitment that the research centre may use the memory of Petr Kellner’s name in commemoration.

Members of the Government met with their Slovak counterparts. They discussed regional cooperation and energy security

Energy security, support and reconstruction of Ukraine and regional relations. These are just some of the topics discussed by the Czech and Slovak government representatives at the bilateral meeting. The joint meeting in a closer format, which took place on Monday, 3 April 2023 in Trenčín, Slovakia, was historically the eighth joint meeting of government representatives of the two countries.

Prime Minister Fiala and OECD Secretary-General present Economic Survey for the Czech Republic 2023 in Prague

On 30 March 2023, Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), presented in Prague the Economic Survey for the Czech Republic 2023 and the first ever Survey on Public Administration in the Czech Republic.

Prime Minister Fiala joins the open letter of the heads of government to the heads of technology giants

The heads of governments of eight European countries, including Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, have written an open letter to the CEOs of the largest technology platforms operating social networks calling for a more effective fight against disinformation. They warn that social media has become a virtual battleground in democratic countries and that hostile powers are using online services to carry out disinformation campaigns to destabilise and weaken democratic countries. In the letter, the heads of government call on technology companies to take concrete measures as well as to improve cooperation with governments, experts or the academic community. The document was signed by the Prime Ministers of Moldova, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine.

In Brussels, Prime Minister Petr Fiala strongly condemned the abduction of Ukrainian children to Russia

On 23 and 24 March, Prime Minister Petr Fiala attended a meeting of the European Council and subsequently the Eurosummit. The main topics this time were the economy and competitiveness, the single market, energy and Ukraine. On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the meeting remotely. EU leaders also had a working lunch with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala inaugurated the new Minister of the Environment Petr Hladík

On Friday, 10 March 2023, Prime Minister Petr Fiala inducted Petr Hladík as Minister of the Environment. Shortly before, he was appointed Minister at Prague Castle by President Petr Pavel. After the resignation of Minister Anna Hubáčková, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka was temporarily entrusted with the management of the Ministry of the Environment from November last year. After his inauguration, the Prime Minister and the new Minister discussed the ministry's priorities for the future.

The Czech Republic has a new president. Petr Pavel took office

The new President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, took the oath of office on Thursday 9 March 2023. This took place at a joint meeting of both chambers of Parliament in Vladislav Hall, which was also attended by members of the Czech Government, including Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
